I am a birder from Hamilton, Ontario, and I'm planning on doing an all out Ontario 'big year' in 2022. I can thank my parents for introducing me to nature at a young age. Being a family that, to this day, does not own a car, we would always go for hikes and bike rides in and around Hamilton’s natural areas (shout-out Royal Botanical Gardens!). My brother Giovanni and I began noticing the birds on these excursions, and a tiny digital camera that I got for one of my single-digit birthdays plus encouragement from our parents’ birder friend Jeff Gilbreath, served to convert us into amateur birders. Giovanni and I would test each other on our ID skills using the Royal Ontario Museum’s photo field guide to the birds of Ontario, complete with its very odd choice of Little Blue Heron on the cover.

What really fanned the flames of our newfound hobby was banding at Ruthven Park, which was run by the Haldimand Bird Observatory. Getting to handle birds and get up close and personal with them was, and continues to be, one of the most magical things I have experienced. Rick Ludkin and all the volunteers there create a wonderful environment for teaching and nurturing the next generation of naturalists. I made some amazing friends there, and the great work the Haldimand Bird Observatory does to promote bird conservation is what inspired me to use my upcoming ‘big year’ (more on that later) as a means of raising money for HBO. 100% of the proceeds go to HBO or Birds Canada, depending on the donor's choice. Donate here!

Honestly though, aside from seasonal banding, an annual ‘big day’ each Spring, and the occasional rarity chase, I didn’t do a lot of serious birding until recently. Caleb Scholtens is to blame for turning my passion for birds into an all out craze. On January 2, 2019, he took me birding in Hamilton, and we were able to rack up a solid species count on the day. Being the ‘chronic lister’ (shout-out to Brendan Muggeridge for coining that phrase) that I am, I said, “What the heck,” and, despite not owning a car, I did my best to build that good start into a respectable year list. I finished with 285 species, thirty-nine of which were Ontario lifers. I was able to join the ‘300 Club’ in 2020, and was also able to bird Texas (before COVID thankfully) as well as BC and Alberta!

In 2022, I am doing an all out Ontario big year, where I will try to see as many species of birds in Ontario as I can. This has been a dream of mine ever since…I got home from birding on January 2, 2019 (curse you and bless you Caleb!). 2021 will be spent feverishly doing my best to earn enough money for the 2022 big year effort…and of course I’ll be birding at the same time! I look forward to keeping you abreast of my big year planning as well as my birding excursions throughout 2021, and, when 2022 comes around, I’ll (hopefully) be dropping weekly updates on my big year progress. Happy birding, and I hope to see you in the field!
